Permaculture Design: The Bougainvillea Green Fence

We had planted a bougainvillea fence all over the periphery at the start of our project in 2011, as a cheaper alternative to a wall, and also as a beauty feature, with 14 varieties of flowers.

The fence serves several functions: it blocks the view of any passerby; it is dense and thorny, preventing animals from entering; it provides shelter and nesting for birds; it provides fodder for goats; it adds beauty and character to the farm; it blocks the dust from the dirt track; and its leaves and flowers provide mulch.

Over time, this fence became a wall through constant pruning, since villagers complained about branches obstructing the path and scratching their motorbikes on the narrow dirt tracks.
